17. It seems as though for the souls in purgatory fear should necessarily decrease and love increase.

In this early period of Luther’s thought he still believed in purgatory. His problem with the church was that to most of the church people purgatory had become simply a place of persecution, whereas he saw purgatory as a place of preparation for Heaven. Because he saw purgatory in that way then the time people spent in purgatory should get better and better until they are out and in Heaven.

The problem that we have with this direction of thought is that we can find no biblical support that purgatory even exists. As far as we can see this is something that the Catholic Church had made up over the years.

Scripture says that is “appointed unto man once to die and then the judgement.” This would seem to say that immediately after death we go directly to heaven or to hell. We believe that if we trust completely in Jesus death and resurrection that will restore our relationship with God the Father. That relationship is restored partially here on earth and completely when we go to heaven which happens as soon as we die.

Because of Jesus we can be absolutely sure that we are going to heaven when we die.

Dear Father in heaven, we come to you as people that have been bought with the price of Jesus suffering and death. We trust that just as He rose from the dead we will also rise to a life with you in heaven forever. Please give us a peaceful release from this world and grant us access to heaven when we die. In Christ we pray. Amen.
