21. Thus those indulgence preachers are in error who say that a man is absolved from every penalty and saved by papal indulgences.
Here in pointing out the problems with the sale of indulgences, Luther calls the indulgence preachers to task. Saying that the papal indulgences can save you was just plain a lie and was done to sell more indulgences.
We can be secure in our place in heaven because our “salvation” does not rest on a papal edict or anything done in this life by ourselves or others. Jesus died and rose again in order to give us a place at the heavenly table. So how does that “save” us?
God is perfect and perfectly holy. That means He has no sin, and no sin can come near to Him, because any contact with sin would back Him less holy. It is as if God lives in a “clean room” and only those who are perfectly clean are able to come near Him. Jesus lived a perfect life and had no sin, but He died anyway to pay for all the sins of all people for all time. So if we believe that He paid for “our” sins then we are counted “Holy” free from the sin that separates us from God. As Holy people of God we can approach Him and even live with Him in heaven. What a glorious plan of God for each of us!
O most Holy Father, my soul craves to live in Your presence. I know that while you already live in me, I will one day live with you! May your kingdom come in all its fullest, Soon! Amen.
