72. But let him who guards against the lust and license of the indulgence preachers be blessed.
This is just the opposite of the Theses before. Here Luther wants those who tell the truth about indulgences to be blessed. The truth is that the saving grace of Jesus Christ has nothing to do with indulgences.
The greatest joy this side of Heaven is to be able to explain the love of God in Christ Jesus to someone who does not know him. God does not need us to proclaim His glory and love but He has allowed us to be a part of His world plan. We get the opportunity to tell someone else just what God had done for us in Jesus. The world is looking for something that they can do or buy in order to get right with God. But the good news is that God has already made us “right” through Jesus Christ.
In fact to be blessed by God is to know that we are being made new as people who live and breathe the love of God, rather than our basic nature to live and breathe love of ourselves. As new people we draw ever closer to our God and our life becomes a beacon pointing to the God who saves us.
So we are blessed when we trust in the grace of God through Jesus rather than any man made answer to our separation from God.
Oh Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for my salvation and hope. Give me the courage to live in You and turn my back on the plans that the world has made for me. In Your name I pray. Amen.
