  1. Again, “Why are funeral and anniversary masses for the dead continued and why does he not return or permit the withdrawal of the endowments founded for them, since it is wrong to pray for the redeemed?”

Luther had found in the old teachings of the church that the church did profess to believe that Christ died for the sins of all people and therefore all souls that are redeemed have been paid for by the blood of Christ on the cross. Only those who have been redeemed can pass into heaven. So the funeral masses and the ongoing payments to the church are not right since they need not pray for the dead who have been redeemed and by the grace of Christ are already in heaven.

Luther in many of these Theses has pointed out that the practice of selling indulgences and now even the selling of funeral masses is against the teachings of the church. Those who sell indulgences and in fact those who buy indulgences are not only going against the teachings of the bible but also against the historic teachings of the church.

Why does the pope allow this and even condone it? The answer to this, like to the other questions is that the pope is most concerned about the money.

Holy God I come to You as one who has to confess that I have often taken money as my God. I have served money when I should have been serving You. Please forgive me these many sins and restore my love for You above all else in my world. Through Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen.
