Again, “What is this new piety of God and the pope that for a consideration of money they permit a man who is impious and their enemy to buy out of purgatory the pious soul of a friend of God and do not rather, because of the need of that pious and beloved soul, free it for pure love’s sake?”
This question seems to be the same as several of the others, “Why isn’t the pope more moved by Love and concern for the souls of the redeemed than for the money that is raised for the renovation of his church?” Unfortunately it seems that “money talks” even in the church. True Today? How often has a church leadership bowed to the will of their largest giver? It may come with a very pious sound, “Pastor I would simply like to honor God with my gift to the building fund, of course I know that you agree with my wishes for the new building.” “I think that we all can agree that the Lord is leading us to find a different pastor more to our liking, by the way I just paid off the church mortgage.” I think we all could agree that the church should be led by the Spirit of God rather than the power of money but that is not what always happens here in our sinful world. Just as Luther wished that the pope would be led by love, we have a desire to follow in the way that the Lord is leading us today, but the pressure of “the devil, the world, and our sinful flesh” are guiding us to be led by the love of money, pride and jealousy. Our only rescue is the Lord Jesus Christ. By the spirit of God we can be changed and we can live as His children powered by His love.
Lord Jesus Christ You are my only hope in this sin washed world. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I may live as Your child. Only by Your power can I be who I was meant to be, if left alone I will serve myself once again. Forgive me and fill me. By Your Power, Amen.
